Serengeti National Park

Serengeti National Park, Tanzania Northern Circuit Safari Destination

Serengeti National Park Highlight: The Serengeti is the setting for so many wildlife documentaries with good reason. Visitors are essentially guaranteed to see an impressive collection of wildlife activities.

The Park can be divided into three sections. The popular southern / central part (Seronera Valley), is what the Masai called the “serengit”, the land of endless plains. It’s typical savanna, scattered with acacias and filled with wild animals.

The western corridor of the Serengeti is marked by the Grumeti River, and has more forests and thick bush. The northern part of the Serengeti national park we have; Lobo area and the boarder of the Masai Mara Reserve on Kenya side, is the slightest visited section.

The Serengeti boasts a staggering 7,900 giraffe, 20,000 eland, 450,000 zebra, 1.3 million wildebeest, 1,600 lions, 1,100 elephants, 280,000 Thompson’s gazelles, 27,000 buffalo, 500 species of birds, 76,000 Topi, and 34,000 Grant’s gazelles.

The annual wildebeest migration is one of the most spectacular and breath-taking events in the world. From the Serengeti national park to Masai Mara Reserve on Kenya over 1.5 million wildebeest and 300,000 zebra and gazelle, relentlessly tracked by Africa’s most predators, migrate in a clockwise fashion over 1,820 miles each year in search of rain mature grass. The amount of moving animals is so large that even when it is in Masai Mara Reserve on Kenya, chunks of it are still in the Serengeti national park side.

Note that even during August to November, the approximate time when most of the Wildebeest Migration are expected to be in the Masai Mara Reserve on Kenya, the wildlife is still abundant in the Serengeti national park, as the ‘resident’ animals choose to stay where they are instead of following great migration.
